Elva 200 - Sue Spence

 

History of Elva 200/10

One of the rear engined cars produced by Elva in the autumn of 1960. 
A car of this type finished third in the British Empire Trophy race of 1960 on it’s debut.
Paddy Hopkirk originally purchased this car as one of two from the factory early in 1961.  The car was manufactured in December 1960.   It was supplied from the factory with Ford 105E engine and Volkswagen gearbox, the specification it still has today.
Paddy and his  friend Charles Eyre-Maunsell competed with the car in hill climbs, sprints and circuit races, mainly in Ireland, including the Mike Hawthorn Trophy meeting at Phoenix Park Dublin The car was sold on in 1962.
The whereabouts of the car between 1963 and 1984 is unknown.
In 1985 it was purchased by Rob Saunders who owned  and raced the car for 17 years in Historic Formula Junior events. 
The car was purchased in 2002 by Sue and Andrew Spence who have owned and raced the car to date. They have competed in the UK and Europe.  In the hands of Andrew the car regularly attained podium places in it’s class. Sue has won the Historic Formula Junior Ladies Trophy driving the car two years in succession. 
The car is registered for the FIA Lurani Trophy and the HSCC Millers Oils Historic Formula Junior Championship.
