Varano - 22nd - 23rd June 2013

On June 22nd-23rd the Varano de Melegari circuit hosted the third meeting of the 2013 Challenge Formule Storiche series: during both races the leading role was played by the driver Bruno Ferrari with his Branca Formula Junior who had arrived second during qualifying behind Paolo Marzatico, with a similar car. Race 1 has been characterized by the close duel between these two drivers, divided by a few tenths for all the time, until a gearbox damage stopped Marzatico at lap 13. Apart from pole-position, Marzatico's only solace has been his best time during the race for just a thousandth. Unfortunately the gearbox damage couldn't be repaired and the driver had to drop out of the competition. Thirteen entrants participated in Race1 but only seven finished the race. Francesco Liberatore with his Brabham F3 and Andrea Guarino with his Lotus 22 FJ fought for the second and third position; the two stubborn drivers entertained Varano circuit with a series of overtakings which finally rewarded Liberatore and his long driving experience. After nine laps Guarino's car ended up in the gravel at first chicane at the end of the straight. The third position during Race 1 has been achieved by the Swiss Angelo Delea with his Brabham BT16 Formula 3. Behind them, there were Federico Buratti (who has been the protagonist of a terrible spin), and the American Ned Spieker after 394 thousandths. Even Angelo Seneci with his De Sanctis has had an animated race: after a bad start, he regained ground over Duncan Rabagliati (FIA Lurani Trophy promoter) and over Francesco Baldanza with his Brabham BT6. Rabagliati dropped out of the track due to an engine problem while Baldanza managed to gain upon Seneci, thus achieving the sixth position. The race turned out to be very demanding: six drivers had to retire, even Isacco Co, the young CFS debutant who drove Ripamonti's Wainer.
Among the six retired drivers, only four entered Race 2, won again by Ferrari: behind him Francesco Zadotti, with his Tecno Formula 3, getting back to the races after two years. The lack of training forced the roman driver to stop after a few laps during Qualifying and Race 1 while during Race 2 he preceded Liberatore and enjoyed his comeback on the podium. Delea tried to overtake him all race long but at the end Liberatore succeeded in staying ahead of him. Guarino and Buratti arrived after these four drivers without getting a real satisfaction, then Baldanza and Seneci: the
first one overtook the second in the final laps at the second chicane. Amongst Formula Junior with front engine, the victory went to the English driver Julia De Baldanza with her beautiful Osca FJ.
Race 2 has been troubled by the presence of oil on the track which required the intervention of the marshals and forced all drivers to keep weird trajectories with their cars. The leader of theoverall classification Angelo Delea is now enjoying his 11-point advantage over Ferrari. Next race will take place at Misano Adriatico circuit on July 27th - 28th.
