NEW ZEALAND The following report was sent by Ian & Bev Garmey
The New Zealand Formula Junior Register was formed
in late 2002 as an informal group by like-minded owners of FJ cars which were
running in New Zealand. There are now 27 genuine cars on our register, that
number can be broken down as follows: 12 cars running to the original (1960s)
regs; four under restoration; six awaiting restoration; and five running to
the old New Zealand National Formula of 1500cc.
Of the 12 cars which race only two are the same,
Lotus 18s, we have Brabhams BT2 and BT9; Gemini Mk3a; Cooper T56; Elva 100 BMC;
Emeryson Elfin BMC; Stanguellini, Volpini, Taraschi and a locally-built FMZ
BMC. The cars under restoration include an Elva 100 DKW, another Lotus 18, a
second Stanguellini and a New Zealand-built Valour Ford.
Formula Junior was never a sanctioned formula in
New Zealand, Juniors imported during the mid-1960s were almost invariably
converted to Ford 1500cc power for competition within the New Zealand National
Formula. Strangely a Formula Junior race was on the programme for the 1961
New Zealand International Grand Prix meeting at Ardmore, an event the NZFJR re-enacted
at Pukekohe during 2003 to become the second ever Formula Junior-only
race held on a New Zealand circuit.
