FJ Track Days at Goodwood - March 22nd & 23rd

This year it is the turn of the rear engine drum brake car owners to wait anxiously for Lord March's invite to The Goodwood Revival.  With over 120 eligible cars no-one is a certainty.  Twenty-three drivers signed on for the dedicated Revival eligible day which enabled five cars to circulate in each batch.  The weather was somewhat cold, blustery and overcast but did not dull the enthusiasm of the drivers.  A wicked crosswind caused some buffeting but everyone found a way to accommodate this.  Peter Mullen was at Goodwood for the first time in the Kieft and was using track time to get to know the circuit and was pleased to discover he had the correct gear ratios fitted.  Another first timer was the De Tomaso ISIS  driven by Mike Gregory, a very tidy looking car having been rebuilt from an insurance write off when the shipping container was dropped. Ken Collins was having difficulty with both oil and fuel problems and sadly his Cooper Ford T56 failed to complete one lap, better luck for the season Ken. Ivo Goeckmann was hoping for better reliabilty this season with the Jolus.  No incidents marred the day but Brian Arculus broke an upright which brought the morning session to a slightly premature end as his car was recovered. Other cars and drivers present were; Steve Russell (Lotus 18); Chris Drake (Elva 300); Michael Waller (Kieft); Angela Cook (Deep Sanderson); James Owen (Elva 200); Jon Milicevic (Lotus 18); Lorraine Gathercole (Lotus 18); David Hall (BMC Mk 2); Lance Whitehead (Lotus 20); David Bain (Elva 200); Sarah Hutchison (Lotus 18); Jeremy Deeley (Cooper T52); John Dowson (Elva 200); John Counsell (Envoy Mk 1); Josie Bishop (Sauter); James Hicks (Caravelle Mk 2); George Christodoulou (BMC MK 2); and Richard Utley/Callum MacLeod (Caravelle Mk 2).

The next morning was assigned to any FJ car with eleven cars entered, including Sarah in Dad's Alexis.  The weather was miserable with a combination of drizzle and longer outbreaks of rain making the track very greasy in places. Goodwood is a challenging course even in ideal weather conditions highlighting drivers weaknesses and catching out the unwary.  Everyone drove within their capabilities and again the session was incident free.  Marcus Pye had a session of laps in Bob  Birrell's Brabham BT6, at least you don't get 3 points on your licence for speeding in the pit lane!  Even with the seat removed 'Spike' Milligan couldn't fit.  Andrew Taylor failed to make Monday's session so entered the Envoy Mk 1 for Tuesday morning.  Michael Waller carefully circulated in the beautifully restored Poggi while  his son Ash drove the Sadler.  Sarah Rabagliati safely negotiated the track and accumalated a fair number of laps despite being pulled out of one session for a sound test, apparently this has to be done each day! Wheras Duncan found out how nerves can affect persons on the pit wall.  Others partaking in the fun were Andrew Wilkinson (Cooper T59); Mark Witherspoon (Elva 100); Tony Pearson (Bandini); Peter Morton (Lightning Envoyette); Paul Smeeth (Lotus 22).
